Karen Woodward, RN was honored at the 2018 Duke Friends of Nursing Gala, held on Saturday, October 27 at the Durham Convention Center. Woodward was one of three PDC Nurses recognized and one of 36 total award recipients.  She was awarded the Hill-Rom Award for Excellence in Nursing Practice.

Woodward has served CFPSM since its inception in 2003. Prior to CFPSM, she worked with Rex Family Practice alongside Jay Stevens, MD and helped lay the foundation for clinical care for the practice.

During her time with CFSPM, she has mentored numerous clinical staff members and has guided the practice through two PCMH (patient-centered, or primary care medical home) certifications. She currently serves as the Nurse Manager for the Cary and Holly Springs locations.  In addition to her clinical responsibilities she functions as a Joint Commission liaison, conducing clinical surveys throughout the PDC and guiding other non-primary care clinics in best practices for patient safety.

Karen’s nomination included commentary from peers, physicians and PDC leaders.  Woodward’s empathetic nature and comments regarding her leadership were highlighted throughout: “When this nurse manager speaks, the physicians and providers listen!  She remains current regarding the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats facing the organization.  She also enlists support for members of the interprofessional team to develop, implement, and sustain best practices.”

Congratulations to Karen for this prestigious award!
